When I first became vegan, I didn’t want to be an activist.
There were many reasons why. The top 3 reasons were: I didn’t want to offend anyone, I didn’t know how to be an activist, and I believed that “people like me don’t do activism”. That last one shocked me, once I realised I had it. People like me? If people like me aren’t activists, then who?
I had a warped idea of what “activism” meant. People without jobs, shoes, ambition, or soap, but with a whole bucketload of anger.
It’s funny how I’d formed beliefs about people based on my own ignorance.
I didn’t want to write off activists without first hand knowledge, so I decided to dip my toes into activism.
I signed up to volunteer at events and outreach. I went to meet-ups and potlucks. I educated myself so I could more confidently engage in conversation with non-vegans.
That’s how it starts.
All that happened nine years ago.
What I’ve learned is that activism isn’t weird, and activists aren’t a bunch of oddballs (not in the bad way, anyway). Activists are more ambitious and hardworking than I’d ever realised. They’re fiercely passionate about something that’s noble, and truly serves the greater good. Their passion is often mistaken for anger.
They’re some of the most selfless people I’ve ever met.
If “people like me” aren’t activists, it’s only because I hadn’t thought deeply enough about what’s really important.
