Today is the last day of the Great Backyard Bird Count. If you live in the Atlanta area, chances are good you're seeing lots of American Goldfinches at your feeders.
Did you know that Goldfinches are some of the strictest vegetarians in the bird world? With the exception of the accidental insect, their diet almost exclusively consists of seeds from grasses and trees. At feeders, Goldfinch are attracted to niger and sunflower seeds.
If you haven't submitted a checklist yet for the Great Backyard Bird Count, there's still time to do so. Count birds for at least 15 minutes wherever you are, and report your findings at the link in our profile. #greatbackyardbirdcount#birds#citizenscience#conservation#birdsmatter#birdsofinstagram
Notch - The notched tooth that this species uses to kill prey according to scientific literature is visible here. Never saw this particular bird bite the victim though as the gulls were usually killed on impact.
