It is important to diagnose any eating disorder as early as possible because she is at risk of damaging her kidneys, heart, lungs, bones, eyes, nerves, just to mention a few. If possible, bring her to me on your next visit, as soon as possible.’
This is something I said to a very distressed and crying mom a few months ago. Yes, being a doctor means that I have to be the ‘bad guy’ sometimes and admit patients agains their will with the help of a psychiatric team.
That girl did not understand. And that’s the problem with most mental health disorders - people don’t see that there is something wrong with them. But for a family member to come, that means that things are getting way out of control and despair is settling in. Because the thing is that any illness affects not only the person itself but also EVERYONE AROUND IT.
There is no shame in having an eating disorder. There is no shame in having any type of mental illness. There is NO SHAME AT ALL to ask for help. What there should be is shame for refusing treatment, after realizing that you need help. There should be shame in just ‘keep going’ and saying you are fine, when you clearly aren’t.
This is for all the people out there trying to gain courage: don’t be jealous and don’t just think of yourself, be brave and don’t let some ghosts ruin your life.
