Self Care and the Overflowing Bucket
How much water can a bucket hold before overflowing? Well, just like the piece of string, it depends on the size of your bucket. But no matter how big your bucket is, if you keep putting water in it, eventually it will overflow. The point between full and overflowing could be just a single rain drop, or it could be a thunderstorm.
Now imagine you are the bucket. You can only hold so much in before you overflow. You might be able to hold a little bit or a lot and still feel like you are coping well, but if you keep taking on more things, eventually you will overflow. The tipping point could be one big big event, or simply a tiny inconvenience.
This is why counselling is so important. Counselling allows you to let some of your "stuff" out. It can help you to make more room in your heart and mind to allow you to cope with whatever life throws your way. Sometimes counselling can even give you the opportunity to create a bigger bucket that can hold more water.
The important thing here is to remember that it doesn't matter if you have a smaller or bigger bucket than other people you know. Your bucket, whatever the size, is so important, and so worthy of help. We each have a tipping point, a point when overflow is inevitable. But there are things you can do, that WE can do, to help alleviate your stress levels.
