Mindfulness, awareness, being present, the power of now are all things that come to mind, some laughed when reading the thought (not saying they took it as a joke.), but it is a very serious question to ask yourself, a question that can be applied to a very vast multitude of things that take place in our day to day life like, when your child got in the car after school and started telling you about their day were you tuned in, were you present or just responding while your mind was really on something else, when your significant other was telling you their feelings about something were you in the room mentally, helloooo are you there?
Having lost so many close to me in less than a year's time, this was a question I found myself asking myself over and over again, the last conversation that you had with your loved one were present in the conversation or were you somewhere else mentally, ultimately taking for granted the conversation as if you knew that you were guaranteed to have more later, not always so.
Be present, be alert, listen, be still, enjoy the moment, enjoy now.
